About the Art
Having lived in many different places - California, Oregon, St.Croix, St. Thomas, Nevada, and now Madison, WI - has aided in my choices of topics. Each piece is an artistic perspective of my childhood and the life experiences I continue to gain. I was inspired to start painting in my teenage years when I observed my grandmother's sketches and my Uncle Mark Sabino’s art career and heard of one of my family members designing St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands flag. These artistic connections have helped shape my ambitions to bond with the art communities wherever I reside.
My abstract, alluring and whimsical pieces reflect the somewhat intense, hurried, quirky, and shuffling movement of everyday life as experienced in California, Oregon, and Nevada. Other works' more sublime, laidback feel comes from encounters while living in St. Croix, St. Thomas, and now Madison, WI.
Earlier works and some current pieces are only acrylic paint on stretched canvas. Acrylic paint is added to the canvases, using either my fingertips, paintbrushes, or crumpled plastic bags dependent on the subject matter. I've expanded my artistic abilities to include joint compound (drywall mud) in more of my artwork. My mixed media pieces use the joint compound, gesso, and acrylic paint. Clay modeling tools are used to sculpt wet joint compounds onto wood or stretched canvas surfaces. Once the compound dries, acrylic paint is brushed on with paintbrushes or fingertips. After the artwork is finished, an acrylic protective coat is sprayed over the entire piece.
Pay close attention to the colors and brush strokes used in each of my painting series:
Wild Ones (wildlife)
Peace of Mind (landscapes and abstract)
Diversity Among Us (Women of different cultural backgrounds)
